I to dve čaše!! Svaka čast konobaru!!

Šopska salata i nešto nalik kuveru

This week’s nice weather we spent on visiting the hometown of Jovan Dučić - Trebinje. After exploring every corner of the town, thrilled with the fact that such a small town has a lot to offer, we decided to take a break after a long walk and refill our energy in one of the most famous restaurants in this town. That is - Dučićev pogled (Dučić's view).

Dučićev pogled (Dučić's view)
The easiest way to get to this restaurant is definitely by car, because it’s located on the hill of Crkvina, from which you can see the whole of Trebinje. When I got out of the cab and walked into the garden of this restaurant, I was more than fascinated. The view is magnificent, and to my greater pleasure, the restaurant wasn’t crowded so I could peacefully enjoy the bird's chirping while looking at the beautiful landscapes of the town.

However, at the first encounter with the waiter, I realized our cooperation would be extremely difficult. After waiting for Coca-Cola for some fifteen minutes and reminding the waiter to bring us the menu, the first disappointment occurred. The menu is poorly written, with about six dishes, and I already dislike three out of six. When I finally decided what to order, the waiter foolishly (I think this is the best word to describe his way of communicating with guests) said that they can only offer us a pork and chicken shashlik. And that they have only one portion of each !! So, to have lunch in this restaurant, you have to eat what's left in the fridge and not what you want. Well, ok! After all, the view is unbelievable and it would be a pity not to have lunch here. We agree to shashlik, and when we asked what do they serve the shashlik with, we get no specific answer, only the waiter’s silly smile. Somehow we finally managed to get the information that the shashlik was served with lettuce, so we ordered Shopska salad and a bottle of sparkling water along with the dishes.

While we were waiting for the food, the sun was already in such a position that it became very hot so we moved to another table, which the waiter cleaned (if you could call it cleaning) after almost half an hour. By cleaning the table, I mean only taking away the dirty plates from the previous guests, you better not expect from this waiter to wipe the table with a damp cloth. I would like to emphasize once again that only two tables were occupied (including ours).

After another half an hour, the waiter brought Shopska salad (KM 5) and a plate with two little jars. Shopska salad came with feta cheese cut into cubes, so it looked more like a version of a Greek salad. As for the jars, one had yogurt with paprika in it, and the other one had something that resembled overcooked jam that was probably made in the time of Jovan Dučić. We got the bread after another twenty minutes of waiting, which the waiter cut with his knife and with his unwashed hands, so for that reason I decided to stay away from it. Shortly after, we got our bottle of sparkling water. You remember we ordered it for about forty minutes ago, right? The next shocking thing was when the waiter brought just the bottle of water, without the glasses. When I said to him that it would be nice to bring us two glasses since it would be rude to drink water from the bottle in the restaurant, he kicked it up a notch and we got the glasses – believe it or not - after only ten minutes of waiting! Two glasses! Well done, waiter!!

Shopska salad and „cover charge“
The hours were passing by, the food didn’t come. Since Shashlik was supposed to be marinated meat, I’ve already begun thinking that the chef marinated the meat upon our arrival, so I wanted to ask the waiter whether it would be better for us to come tomorrow, so the chef doesn’t get tired of cooking two dishes, and to let the poor thing rest a little. But wait, a miracle !! The waiter is bringing two plates!! When I looked at the Chicken shashlik (KM 12) and Pork shashlik (KM 12), I had to ask myself what we were waiting for so long. Meat served on, in and around some cold thin tortillas with three leafs of lettuce that had been seasoned with balsamic vinegar, I got all teary-eyed. Not from being happy, but out of desperation !! The meat was tough, that piece of it surely wasn’t marinated. And when I took a better look at all the pieces, I realized that there was enough charcoal on it, I better pack it and use it for Labor Day grilling. It would be a pity to waist it, right?

Pork shashlik

Chicken shashlik

Burnt pork shashlik
To make the matter worse, the waiter asked us - Is the food tasty!?! Without hesitation we told him that we haven’t yet tried anything this bad and we asked him to bring us the bill. He brought three bills, but he had trouble to calculate the total sum, so we just left him the money on the table, including the undeserved tip. Of course, we didn't get „sorry for waiting“, „sorry for serving you that burnt shashlik and the jam we had kept in the fridge from the 19th century“. No reaction whatsoever except his silly look. Only a bill of about RSD 2500 that I can’t get over.

So, as far as this restaurant is concerned, it’s such a shame that a place with so much potential, both for its exterior and its location, has such a bad choice of dishes and even worse service. Apart from the view that is perfect, there offer absolutely nothing else.

As Jovan Dučić says - When one takes into account how many fools, lunatics, scoundrels and impersonal people there are in the world, one stops loving life in such a poisonous air. That's exactly how I would describe our visit to this restaurant.

Trpeza

Zaključak: ukusno i preobilno.

After all the restaurants we visited over the years, I can guarantee that it’s really hard  owning a national cuisine restaurant in Belgrade. There’s a lot of such restaurants throughout the city and it’s very difficult to deal with the competition. So, one day, among all those places, we decided to go to dinner at Trpeza, to check whether the comments written on their site are true.

Trpeza
There is a funny "saying" that says that the best restaurants are located outside the city center. Hence, the owners of Trpeza chose well, concidering they’re located in Mali Mokri Lug. There’s also a saying that restaurants with the best food are the ones with the modest interiors, not the “fancy“ ones. Lo and behold, Trpeza confirms that saying, too. The interior corresponds to the classic national restaurant with homey atmosphere.

Trpeza - interior
The menu is exclusively national, so it's up to you to decide whether you will choose something of the grill, a ready meal or a specialty made under the bell. We chose Stuffed pork tenderloin (half-size portion - RSD 745) and Fried stuffed peppers (RSD 155), and with that Shopska salad (RSD 295) and Mixed salad (RSD 245). If you want a bun, you have to add up RSD 60.

When I tried the stuffed pepper, I was very, very satisfied and surprised. The portion consists of two large, fried hot peppers stuffed with cheese, served with cabbage salad. As a big fan of spicy food, I confirm that this is the right choice. Some will have this as an appetizer, but I really couldn’t, the portion is big, but if your appetite is also big, just go-ahead.

Fried stuffed peppers
Stuffed pork tenderloin was great as well. You can see the photos of some dishes on the Trpeza website, and this dish looks identical as in the photo. The whole portion weighs 1350gr, we ordered half-size portion, which was enough. If I had ordered a whole one and if I had eaten it all, I would have had food supplies for the next week. The tenderloin is filled with kaymak, cheese, mushrooms and bacon, and is served with fries and onions. All in all: delicious and large.

Stuffed pork tenderloin

Shopska salad

Mixed salad
The price-quality ratio is great, so no one will leave hungry. This is confirmed by the fact that it’s better to make a reservation, because you will hardly find a free table if you just show up. Here, you’ll often see people celebrating birthdays or having  business dinners, since everyone likes to eat good food. Also, all the praise for the service and the waiters.

If you crave local specialties, or just want to try excellent Serbian cuisine, book a table at Trpeza and enjoy.

Uz doručak gratis dobijate i đus.

This summer is slowly but surely coming to its end, so I took the opportunity to go and have breakfast at Belgrade's Sea (Ada Ciganlija). I prefer visiting Ada in early September or end of May, because I can’t properly enjoy the nature and the view of the lake when it’s too hot or crowded. My favorite restaurant at Ada is definitely Druga kuća, so let’s begin.

Druga kuća
Druga kuća is on the “Belgrade side“ of the lake, which is logical since it’s on my list  of favorite restaurants. I only visit the Makiš side when I decide to ride my bike or stroll around the lake. I really can’t relax while being surrounded by teenagers gone wild and fake wannabe Belgraders. In addition to this restaurant, there’s also one at Banovo Brdo, but about that one maybe some other time. It’s located almost at the beginning of the promenade, so you won’t need much time to get to it by foot. You’ll immediately recognize it because it really stands out from other “beach style“ cafes. The red and white checkered tablecloths, wooden benches, arranged area around the lake, all that makes it unique among others at Ada.

The menu is national, so if you visit, be sure to try kebabs(ćevapčići). The prices are lower, and each dish can be ordered in half-size portion. I especially like their breakfast menu, so this time I decided for Druga kuća breakfast (RSD 350). This is the largest breakfast in quantity when this restaurant is in question, and you will get 3 sunny-side up eggs, 2 sausages with juicy fried bacon, grilled mushrooms and homemade cheese with tomatoes. With breakfast, you also get a glass of juice for free. In my opinion, the only disadvantage of this restaurant is that if you want to sit right next to the lake, the waiter will tell you that you can’t have breakfast there, but only in the upper part of the restaurant, by the promenade. I don’t think that’s justified, especially when there’s not a lot of people, because we all prefer to be closer to the water. That's why we come to Ada, right?

Druga kuća breakfast
As for the service in general, the waiters are very often changing here. Sometimes it happens that you get a very good waiter, but sometimes I had to wait for a waiter in a half-empty restaurant for more than 20 minutes, actually, he noticed me after I waved my hands so hard I could almost fly. So you never know, hope for the best.

Anyways, if you want to escape the city hustle and bustle and enjoy nature, my advice is to visit Druga kuća and have breakfast there. You will fill your tummy with food and your body with energy, enough to go and take a walk around the entire circle around the lake, without taking a break. In my opinion, the perfect start of a lovely day!
